Canada Takes Second Place at 2001 Commonwealth Championship
EASTBOURNE, ENGLAND - Canada's 8-member team placed second at the 2001 Commonwealth Lifesaving Championship held at the 33m long Sovereign Centre pool in Eastbourne, England. Australia, who a week prior to the championships faced off with Canada in a head-to-head competition called the "Moose Meet", placed first overall. The host nation, England, placed 3rd.
Adam Nicholson from Guelph earned gold in the men's 66m Carry with Fins event. The men's team took gold in the 4 x 33m Medley Relay and silver in the 4 x 16.5m Manikin Relay. Nicholson also earned a bronze medal in the finals of the 33m Carry event.
Halfiax's Lori Borgal earned a silver medal in the women's 33m Carry event while Canada's women took silver in the finals of the 4 x 33m Medley Relay.
Jeff Arthurs of Edmonton set a new Canadian record in the Line Throw event with a time of 15.39 seconds. Canada placed sixth in the Simulated Emergency Response Competition, won by England.
The Commonwealth Championships were part of the Society's Quinquennial Commonwealth Conference program, which also saw delegates visit Buckingham Palace at the invitation of the Queen - the Society's Patron.
Canada's next international outing will be the lifesaving surf competition that is part of the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia in August this year.
The Lifesaving Society is the Canadian governing body for lifesaving sport - a sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The Society is a national, charitable organization working to prevent drowning and water-related injury.
