Canada takes SERC in South Africa

TORONTO, ON – Canada’s National Team won the Simulated Emergency Response Competition (SERC) at the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Durban, South Africa yesterday. Canada’s SERC team consisted of Jeff Arthurs, Véronique Comtois, John Eddolls and Bryan McMillan.

After the first day of competition, Canada sits in third place behind Australia and host South Africa. Other Canadian results after the first day of competition at the Kings Park Pool are:

200 m Obstacle Swim

Women: Jennifer Ellison – seventh in 2:21.78.

Men: Bryan McMillan – second in 2:02.88.

100 m Carry With Fins

Women: Jennifer Ellison – fifth in 1:12.44.

Men: Jeff Arthurs – fourth in 57.88.

50 m Manikin Carry

Women: Jennifer Ellison – fifth in 43.62 and Lori Borgal – seventh in 44.22.

Men: Jeff Arthurs – sixth in 37.51.

100 m Tow With Fins

Women: Géraldine Lachance-Fortin – third in 1:10.20.

Men: Bryan McMillan – third in 1:05.49.

4 x 25 m Manikin Relay

Women: Lori Borgal, Véronique Comtois, Jennifer Ellison and Géraldine Lachance-Fortin – fourth in 2:08.20.

Men: Jeff Arthurs, John Eddolls, Bryan McMillan and Scott Van Doormaal – third in 1:32.12.

4 x 50 m Medley Relay

Women: Lori Borgal, Véronique Comtois, Jennifer Ellison and Géraldine Lachance-Fortin – fourth in 2:05.83.

Men: Jeff Arthurs, John Eddolls, Bryan McMillan and Scott Van Doormaal – third in 1:47.88.

Jennifer Ellison and Bryan McMillan set Canadian records with their performances in the 200 m Obstacle Swim, as did Jeff Arthurs in the 100 m Carry With Fins. The Canadian men also set a record in the 4 x 25 m Manikin Relay.

The Commonwealth Championships concludes today. Watch for final results next week. Back home, the 2003 Canadian Surf Lifesaving Championships (age group, senior and masters) is slated for August 24—27 in Barrie and Wasaga Beach, Ontario.
