Organization Structure

On July 10, 2006, The Royal Life Saving Society Canada (Lifesaving Society) incorporated "Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada" (LSC) as a not-for-profit corporation to act as Canada's national sport organization (NSO) for Lifesaving. All activity related to Lifesaving Sport in Canada now operates under the governance of Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada.

Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada is fully accountable to the Lifesaving Society and operates with the following objects:

  • To support the drowning prevention work of the Lifesaving Society and its humanitarian mission;
  • To provide athletes, coaches and officials opportunities for participation in lifesaving sport at all levels from developmental to high-performance;
  • To internationally position the Lifesaving Society as a leader in lifesaving sport and provide Canadians international opportunities for the pursuit of excellence.

As the sole member of Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada, the Royal Life Saving Society Canada is responsible to:

  • Elect directors of Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada;
  • Approve amendments to the letters patent and bylaws;
  • Approve annual audited financial statements;
  • Approve the corporation's auditors;
  • Ratify acts of the Board of Directors.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of LSC are responsible for:

  • Providing strategic leadership.
  • Approving and monitoring corporate policies and budgets.
  • Approving committees to provide the NSO with expert advice.
  • Approving the officers of the NSO.
  • Advocating on behalf of lifesaving sport.

Service Agreement

A service agreement exists between the Lifesaving Society and LSC. The service agreement is designed to ensure that LSC cannot establish a strategic direction inconsistent with the Lifesaving Society and to define the relationship between LSC and the Lifesaving Society and the provincial/territorial branches.

Sport Commission

The Sport Commission is the management arm of LSC. The Sport Commission manages lifesaving sport activities in Canada.

Sport Commission Activity Centres

Each activity centre is an operational unit of the Sport Commission. The following are activity centres of Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada:

  • Athlete Services
  • High Performance
  • Event Management
  • Athletes' Council
  • Leadership
  • Technical Services
  • Support Services
  • Communications

The Lifesaving Society elects Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada directors and Lifesaving/Sauvetage Canada directors appoint Sport Commission officers.

Sport Commission Composition

The Sport Commission voting members include an Athlete Representative, elected by the Athlete Representative election process, and, five (5) to nine (9) officers (managers of activity centers) appointed by the Board.

Ex-Officio, Non-Voting Members include:

  • Canadian members of ILS & RLSS Sport Committees
  • Lifesaving / Sauvetage Canada President
  • RLSSC Executive Director
  • Past Commissioner

Sport Commissioner

The Sport Commissioner is the chair of the Sport Commission and is appointed by the Lifesaving Society of Canada board of directors. The Chair is non-voting.
